Why I love it (and you will too!)

I grew up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and so did my husband. We’ll still make them and take them to the park. And don’t even get us started on the crunchy versus creamy debate, that’s a whole conversation on its own!

My mawmaw used to pack my lunches for elementary school, and I can remember hoping it would be PB&J day. That sweet, fruity, nutty combo squished between two slices of bread was just so good. What more could you ask for at 8 years old? And as a peanut butter lover, I was always just as excited about peanut butter cups, so you definitely need to try my Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups, too.

I wanted to take those nostalgic flavors and turn them into something fun and refreshing… and yep, it turned out just as delicious as I knew it would! It’s naturally vegan, so easy to make, and you probably have everything you need already in your kitchen. Tip: I love freezing my own fruit because it’s a simple way to save bananas from going to waste, just slice them up once they’re getting a little too ripe for your liking.

Every time I sip this smoothie, it takes me right back to those school days, and I know you’re going to love it just as much! It’s a quick, dairy-free treat that will be your new go-to, whether it’s for breakfast, a snack, or a cool-down in the summer heat!

Ingredients you will need

Think PB&J sandwich… just simple ingredients blended into a thick, creamy smoothie that’s naturally vegan. The best part is knowing exactly what’s in it instead of reaching for something processed. If you want to learn more, I share all about processed food in my how to avoid processed food post!

Ingredients for PB&J Smoothie on a white background in individual bowls.
  • Frozen strawberries – This is your “jelly” flavor. They add fruity sweetness and that classic PB&J taste.
  • Frozen banana slices – These make the smoothie thick and creamy. If you’re slicing and freezing your own, use ripe bananas so you get that extra natural sweetness.
  • 100% apple juice – This helps everything blend smoothly while keeping the smoothie light. Make sure you’re using 100% apple juice for the best flavor. I love this certified organic honeycrisp apple juice because it’s so delicious!
  • Peanut butter – The star of the show! Use smooth peanut butter so it blends super creamy. If you can’t have peanuts, it’s also incredible with my homemade almond butter with just almonds & salt.

Tools you Will Needed

Just a couple basic kitchen tools and you’re good to go!

  • High-Powered Blender – A good blender really makes a difference, especially when working with frozen fruit. I use this 10-speed blender for all of my smoothies, and it gets them perfectly creamy every time!
  • Measuring Cups – For measuring the fruit and apple juice so you get the perfect consistency. This stainless steel set is my go-to, but honestly, this smoothie is easy to eyeball.

Looking for a natural, creamy smoothie that tastes just like your favorite childhood sandwich? Here’s how to make it:

  1. Blend It Up

Throw your frozen strawberries, banana slices, apple juice, and peanut butter into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Add a splash more juice if you want it a little thinner, just until it’s perfect.PB&J Smoothie blended in a red and clear blender.

Smudge a little peanut butter inside your glass for a fun PB swirl, then pour in the smoothie and enjoy!

FAQs and Tips

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

You can, but frozen fruit really gives this smoothie that thick, creamy texture. If you use fresh, I’d recommend adding a handful of ice to help thicken it up.

Can I use milk instead of apple juice?

Yes! Milk (dairy or non-dairy) will make it a little creamier. Apple juice keeps it lighter and gives it that classic “jelly” sweetness.

What if it’s too thick or too thin?

Too thick? Add a splash more apple juice and blend again. Too thin? Toss in a few extra frozen banana slices. Keep adjusting until you get the texture you’re looking for.

Can I make it ahead of time?

It’s best fresh, but you can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just give it a good shake or stir before drinking because it may separate a bit.

Add Protein

Want to make it more filling? Add a scoop of vanilla or peanut butter protein powder before blending. It makes this PB&J Smoothie perfect for breakfast or post-workout. You may need a splash more apple juice to keep it smooth.

Swap the Strawberries for Blueberries

Use frozen blueberries instead of strawberries for a fun twist. It gives the smoothie that classic “grape jelly” flavor we all grew up with, and it still tastes delicious. The color turns a deep purple and it’s just as thick and creamy!

Go Nut-Free

Use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter for the same creamy texture without the nuts. It still gives you that classic sweet and nutty flavor, making it a great option for anyone with peanut allergies or for school-safe lunches.
